(plain)—the name of several places. (1) (Song 2:1; Isa. 33:9) the well-known plain of Palestine between the Mediterranean and the hill country west and northwest of Jerusalem. It was celebrated for beauty and fertility and abounded in flowers and fruit trees. Hyacinths, roses, anemones, tulips, and other flowers grew there; the flowers of Sharon are named in Song of Songs 2:1 and Isaiah 35:2. The source says that the plain was densely inhabited in antiquity but, apart from a few places, had become sparsely settled and steppe-like by the nineteenth century, applying Isaiah 33:9 to its condition.
