Gibbethon

(prominent place) (Josh. 19:44) — a city of the tribe of Dan, afterward given, with all its suburbs, to the Levites (Josh. 21:28). In the reign of Nadab, king of Israel, it belonged to the Philistines. During the siege of this city, Nadab was treacherously slain by Baasha, who afterward became king of Israel (1 Kings 15:27). The city of Gibbethon probably lay very close to the Philistine border and for that reason was occupied by the Philistines. The Israelites, it appears, tried without success to wrest it from their hands. In Eusebius’s Onomasticon it is called by the name Gale, 17 Roman miles from Caesarea.
