(completeness, perfection) — the name of two persons: a) (Gen. 10:2, 3) eldest son of Japheth and progenitor of a people that, it appears, preserved its national identity even down to the time of Ezekiel (38:6). Opinions differ regarding the later history of Gomer’s descendants: Josephus says that he was the progenitor of those whom the Greeks call the Galatians, but who in his time were called the Gomerians. Others think that they are identical with the ancient Cimmerians. To this day the descendants of the ancient Cimmerians remain in Ireland and Wales; b) (Hos. 1:3) name of the daughter of Diblaim, wife of the prophet Hosea, a woman given to harlotry, whom he was commanded to take to himself, in token of the unfaithfulness and apostasy from God of the people of Israel.
