(2 Kings 22:14)—a prophetess, wife of Shallum, keeper of the wardrobe, a contemporary of the prophets Jeremiah and Zephaniah, perhaps at the beginning of their prophetic ministry. When the priest Hilkiah found a copy of the Book of the Law, the reading of which alarmed King Josiah, the prophetess Huldah, to whom, by the king’s command, they turned for an explanation, on behalf of the king, the people, and all Judah, concerning the words of the book that had been found, uttered a notable prophecy concerning the fate of the Israelites (2 Kings 22:14-20, 2 Chron.
34:14-28). Enjoying high esteem during her life, she was also honored with special distinction after her death, since, according to rabbinic tradition, she was buried within the walls of Jerusalem itself.
