—God’s revealed instruction by which good is distinguished from evil and human life is directed toward him. Scripture speaks of the work of the law written on the heart and witnessed by conscience (Rom. 2:14-15), and also of the commandments publicly given to Israel. Because sin distorts judgment and suppresses conscience, the external word exposes transgression and teaches God’s will (Gal. 3:19). Christian theology does not set conscience and revelation against each other: conscience requires formation by truth, and the law reaches its fulfillment in love of God and neighbor through Christ (Matt. 22:37-40; Rom. 13:8-10).
