Locust

(Nah. 3:15; Matt. 3:4; Rev. 9:3, 7 and elsewhere)—a jumping, herbivorous insect of the order Orthoptera. It multiplies in countless numbers, is extraordinarily voracious, and is therefore regarded as one of the most terrible scourges of God in the East. The eighth plague sent upon Pharaoh king of Egypt came in the form of locusts (Exod. 10:4–15; Ps. 78:46). “The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands” (Prov. 30:27), while Revelation compares them to horses prepared for battle (Rev. 9:7). Scripture often presents them as a particular instrument of divine wrath (Deut. 28:38–42; 1 Kings 8:37; 2 Chron. 6:28).
