(elevation, or, according to others, beauty) (Josh 13:18; 21:37 and elsewhere) — the name of a city of the tribe of Reuben, given to the Levites; it lay east of the Jordan, in the land of the Amorites. According to Eusebius, a garrison was stationed here for defense against raids by the Bedouins and others. Its location is now difficult to determine, but it probably lay near Jahaz, on the plain of Heshbon.
