Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Exod 28:4, 36-39; Lev 8:9 and elsewhere) - the sacred headdress of the Jewish high priest, a turban of fine, clean white linen wrapped about the head. A gold plate inscribed 'HOLINESS TO THE LORD' was fastened to its front with a blue cord (Exod 28:36-38). The high priest wore it on formal solemn occasions (Lev 8:9; 16:4; Zech 3:5). It plainly signified his purity, honor, and dignity. Its original shape cannot be determined with certainty: some thought it resembled a crown, others a simple head-band or turban.
