Nergal

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(the planet Mars, deity of war) (2 Kings 17:30)—this word, in the opinion of most, ordinarily denotes a cock, and it has generally been thought that Nergal, as an idol, was represented on statues and images that bore some resemblance to this bird. At present, however, most suppose that this was the planet Mars. This deity was especially worshiped at Cuthah, and in the Second Book of Kings it is said that the men of Cuthah made Nergal their god, who was depicted as a winged lion with a human head. Images of this pagan deity are still found on Assyrian monuments.
