(Num 11:5) - when Israel tired of manna in the wilderness, the people murmured to Moses: 'We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick.' Onions grew abundantly and in excellent form in Egypt. Travelers described Egyptian onions as larger and more pleasant than other kinds; one said that they differed from European onions as much as a bad turnip differs in taste from a good apple.
