Ophel

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(hill, elevation, tower) (2 Chron. 27:3; Neh. 3:26)—a part of Jerusalem, apparently east of Zion. In Nehemiah’s time it was inhabited by the temple servants. A very high tower crowned the summit of the hill and is repeatedly mentioned in Scripture. Uzziah and Jotham constructed the tower upon Ophel’s wall and other fortifications.
