Tanis (Zoan)
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Judith 1:10; Num. 13:22)—an ancient city in the northeastern Nile Delta. Scripture’s Zoan is commonly identified with Tanis, though the region’s shifting royal centers and reused monuments complicate simple equations. Numbers says that Zoan was built seven years after Hebron. The encyclopedia’s ruins and nineteenth-century place-names reflect the state of exploration in its period.
