The Dagi

(in Syriac: the wise) (Ezra 4:9) — the name of a people originally dwelling within the domains of Assyria, and afterward of the Persian empire, whose settlers, at the time of the Assyrian kingdom’s conquest of Israel, were resettled in Samaria. By this name is generally understood the Dahae of Herodotus, a pastoral tribe of Persia, dwelling to the southeast of the Caspian Sea, whose designation, it appears, is preserved to this day in the name of the Caucasian region of Dagestan. Some more recent philologists, however, derive from it the present-day Danes.
