A Persian oval gold coin, bearing the image of the king, crowned, kneeling, and holding a bow in his left hand and a scepter or spear in his right, which was in circulation among the Hebrews after the captivity, in place of the sacred shekel, as the Temple tax. In value it was equal to 20 silver Attic drachmas, or one Hebrew shekel (Ezra 2:69; Neh. 7:70), and weighed about half an ounce of pure gold. This coin took its name, it is thought, from the fact that it was first struck by Darius Hystaspes, king of Persia.
