The Girzites

(inhabitants of a barren, empty land) (1 Sam. 27:8) — according to Gesenius and Dean Stanley, this was a Canaanite tribe occupying the surrounding country, from which, perhaps, the city of Gerizim also took its name. In 1 Samuel (27:8) they, together with the Geshurites and the Amalekites, are reckoned as already ancient inhabitants of this land, that is, of the south of Palestine, from Shur to Egypt. This was a nomadic people, possessing great flocks of sheep, oxen, donkeys, camels, and the like.
