Tigris (Hiddekel)

(swift; Gen. 2:14; Tob. 6:1–2; Dan. 10:4)—one of the great rivers of Mesopotamia and one of the four rivers named in Eden. Rising in the highlands of eastern Anatolia, it flows southeast past the region of ancient Nineveh and modern Mosul and Baghdad, receives major tributaries from the east, and joins the Euphrates in the Shatt al-Arab before reaching the Persian Gulf. In antiquity an extensive network of canals connected and irrigated the lands between the two rivers.
