Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Judg. 11:3, 5; 1 Macc. 5:13)—a region east of the Jordan where Jephthah lived after fleeing from his brothers. The men of Tob appear among the Aramean allies hired against David (2 Sam. 10:6, 8). The Tobians of 2 Maccabees 12:17 were Jews living in or near the same Transjordanian district. Its precise boundaries are uncertain.
