Tyre

(rock; Josh. 19:29)—the renowned Phoenician city on the Mediterranean coast. Ancient Tyre comprised an island stronghold and a settlement on the mainland, often called Palaetyrus or Old Tyre. It stood near the border of Asher, but remained under its own rulers. Hiram of Tyre maintained friendly relations with David and Solomon, supplied cedar, craftsmen, and building materials for the palace and Temple, and joined Solomon’s maritime ventures from Ezion-geber (2 Sam. 5:11; 1 Kings 5; 9:26–28).
