Wedding Garment

(Matt. 22:11)—the garment required of a guest in Christ’s parable of the wedding feast. The source explains it through an Eastern custom in which a host supplied festive clothing, though the extent of that practice is debated. Within the parable, the improperly dressed guest has accepted the invitation without the fitting response demanded by the king. Christian interpretation has therefore seen the garment as the righteousness, holiness, or transformed life that must accompany entrance into the joy of God’s kingdom and the wedding supper of the Lamb.
