Love

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(1 Cor 13; Matt 22:36-40) - the commandments of the Lord were divided between two tablets because they contain two forms of love, love toward God and love toward one's neighbor, and therefore prescribe two kinds of duty. When a Pharisee, a lawyer, asked which commandment was greatest, Jesus answered: 'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets' (Matt 22:37-40).
