(righteous)—the name of several persons: (1) (2 Sam. 8:17) son of Ahitub and high priest in the days of David and Solomon. First Chronicles 24:3 places him in the line of Eleazar. In his youth he distinguished himself for courage and joined David at Hebron with twenty-two leaders of his father’s house and many warriors. During Absalom’s revolt Zadok and Abiathar wished to follow David from Jerusalem with the Ark, but at the king’s request they returned and awaited the outcome. When Adonijah later attempted to seize David’s throne, Abiathar supported him, but Zadok remained faithful and took the leading priestly part in securing Solomon’s succession. Zadok anointed Solomon at Gihon, and after Abiathar’s removal remained sole high priest (1 Kings 1:8–39).
