Bar-jesus

(son of Jesus) (Acts 13:6) — a magician and false teacher, who lived with Sergius Paulus in the city of Paphos, on the island of Cyprus, during the stay there of the Apostle Paul and Barnabas. Sergius Paulus, proconsul of the Roman government, wished to hear the apostolic preaching of Paul and Barnabas, but Bar-jesus, foreseeing that with the light of the evangelical preaching his own dark activity would come to an end, stubbornly opposed the holy apostles, for which the Apostle Paul struck him with blindness.
As a result of this miracle, the proconsul Sergius came to believe in the Lord. Bar-jesus is also called Elymas (an honorific name from an Arabic word meaning “wise,” and explained by the Apostle Luke by the word “sorcerer”). It is still heard even to this day in the Turkish word Ulema.
