Elymas

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Acts 13:8) — the Arabic name of the Jewish sorcerer and false prophet Bar-Jesus, who belonged to the retinue of the proconsul Sergius during the Apostle Paul’s visit to the island of Cyprus. During the preaching of the Apostle Paul and Barnabas, he tried to turn the proconsul away from faith in Christ, for which he received a stern rebuke from the apostle and was struck blind by God. The proconsul, seeing what had happened and marveling at the teaching of the Lord, believed in Christ (Acts 13:6–12).
