Jambres

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(2 Tim 3:8) - named together with Jannes by the holy apostle Paul in this passage. Both are also named in the Talmud and in the Targum of Jonathan on Exodus 7:11 as the magicians who acknowledged themselves defeated when the third Egyptian plague appeared (Exod 8:19). 'And the magicians could not stand before Moses,' says Exodus 9:11. According to tradition, they were sons of Balaam, and Theodoret testifies that St. Paul likewise learned their names from tradition. Traces of this tradition appear elsewhere: they are mentioned under these names by Pliny, the Pythagorean philosopher Numenius, and others.
