(Gen. 10:14; Ps. 60:8)—a people who occupied the southern coastal plain of Canaan, especially the five-city confederation of Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, Gath, and Ekron (Josh. 13:3). Biblical tradition associates them with Caphtor (Deut. 2:23; Amos 9:7; Jer. 47:4), commonly related to Crete or the Aegean world. Their precise origins and relationship to the genealogical notice in Genesis 10 remain debated.
