Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(asked of God) (1 Chron. 3:17; Matt. 1:12 and elsewhere)—father of Zerubbabel; yet 1 Chronicles 3:19 calls Zerubbabel a son of Pedaiah. The source explains the difference by supposing that Shealtiel died childless and that Pedaiah raised offspring for his brother under the law of levirate marriage, so the eldest was legally reckoned Shealtiel’s son.
