Tablets of the Covenant

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Exod. 24:12; Deut. 4:13; 2 Cor. 3:3; Heb. 9:4)—the two stone tablets on which God Himself wrote the Ten Commandments. The encyclopedia follows the traditional division in which the first four commandments concern the knowledge and worship of God and the remaining six concern duty toward one’s neighbor. The two tablets thus correspond to the two great commandments of love: love of God and love of neighbor.
