Tadmor; Palmyra

(1 Kings 9:18; 2 Chron. 8:4)—an oasis city in the Syrian desert between Damascus and the Euphrates. Its Semitic name Tadmor is ancient; the Greco-Roman name Palmyra was associated with palms. Because its springs and fertile oasis lay on caravan routes linking Mesopotamia with Syria and the Mediterranean, the city became a major center of long-distance trade.
