Tarshish

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

—a name applied in Scripture to three persons and to a distant place or region. (1) A son of Javan, son of Japheth (Gen. 10:4; 1 Chron. 1:7), whose line is associated with the maritime peoples. (2) A son of Jediael in Benjamin and head of a family of warriors (1 Chron. 7:10-11). (3) One of the seven Persian and Median princes who had access to King Ahasuerus and advised concerning Queen Vashti (Esth. 1:14).
