likewise contains one chapter, of fifteen verses. It was probably written about the same time as the First Epistle to Gaius the Corinthian, mentioned in Romans 16:23 and 1 Corinthians 1:14. Its purpose is to encourage Gaius in faithfulness to Christ and hospitality toward the poor and needy, to warn him against the ambitious Diotrephes, and to unite him with the good Demetrius. 'Peace be to thee,' the apostle concludes; 'our friends salute thee. Greet the friends by name. Amen' (v. 15).
