Togarmah

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Gen. 10:3; 1 Chron. 1:6; Ezek. 27:14; 38:6)—a son of Gomer and grandson of Japheth, and the ancestral name of a people associated with the far north. “Beth-togarmah” traded horses, warhorses, and mules with Tyre (Ezek. 27:14) and appears among the northern allies in Ezekiel’s oracle against Gog (Ezek. 38:6). The source identifies Togarmah broadly with Armenia; the name is often connected with eastern Anatolia, but its precise ethnic and geographical range remains debated.
