Armageddon

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Rev. 16:16) (height of Megiddo) — a city at the foot of Mount Carmel, which became known as the site of bloody battles and the slaying of Josiah (2 Kings 23:29; Judg. 5:19). The name of this city, because of its earlier history and events, is also used in the Revelation of St. John as a symbolic designation of some dreadful event in the future fate of Christ’s Church.
