(see Ararat) (2 Kings 19:37) — an inland country at the eastern end of Asia Minor, extending 430 English miles from east to west and 300 English miles from north to south; it borders the Mediterranean Sea on the southwest, the Black Sea on the northwest, the Caspian Sea on the east; its western border lies 600 English miles west of Constantinople. The Euphrates, the Tigris, and other rivers have their sources within the bounds of Armenia. It is divided into 15 regions, of which the central one is called Ararat.
In this last region stood the biblical mountain on which, it is supposed, Noah’s ark came to rest. In the sacred books Armenia is usually called the land of Ararat. The Armenians are Christians, differing little from the Christians of the Greek Eastern Church, except for a minority of them — Roman Catholics, who acknowledge the supremacy of the pope; all of them consider their spiritual lord and head to be the Patriarch of Etchmiadzin, who usually resides in Etchmiadzin, near Tiflis, in the Caucasus.
