Bezek

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(lightning, splendor; by others, gold, a precious metal) — the name of two localities in Palestine: a) (Judg. 1:4, 5) the dwelling place of Adoni-bezek, in the inheritance of the tribe of Judah, inhabited by the Canaanites and Perizzites (vv. 3, 4); b) (1 Sam. 11:8) a place where Saul numbered the army of Judah and Israel before the campaign to Gilead to deliver Jabesh-gilead. In Eusebius’s Onomasticon two localities of this name are mentioned, both lying 70 Roman miles from Shechem, on the road to Beth-shean. No precise determination of these localities has yet been made.
