Ephesus

(desirable, longed for) (Acts 19:35) — the most celebrated of the cities of Asia Minor, situated on the river Cayster, near its mouth, thirty English miles south of Smyrna. Ephesus was the ornament and metropolis of proconsular Asia, and was famed for its renowned temple of Diana (see Artemis). St. Paul the Apostle arrived in this city in A.D. 54 and began his preaching in the Jewish synagogue. Many of those who were converted to Christianity through his preaching were baptized, and the gift of tongues and of prophecy was sent down upon them from above.
He then preached in a public building, namely in the school of a certain Tyrannus. His preaching at Ephesus continued for as long as three years and was accompanied by many miracles (19:12ff.), and its success was very great.
