(name) (Gen. 6:10)—the eldest son of Noah in the source’s reckoning and ancestor of many nations. Genesis 11:10 says that Shem was one hundred years old and begot Arphaxad two years after the Flood. He, his wife, and the rest of Noah’s family were saved in the ark. His sons were Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram, and he lived five hundred years after Arphaxad’s birth.
