(Acts 14:12)—the Greek messenger god, called Mercury by the Romans. After Paul healed a man at Lystra who had been unable to walk from birth, the crowd shouted that the gods had come down in human form. They called Barnabas Zeus and Paul Hermes because Paul was the chief speaker. Paul and Barnabas tore their garments and urged the people to turn from vain idols to the living God (Acts 14:8-18).
