Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(according to Fürst, mine or miner; according to Gesenius, darkness) (Num. 33:42–43)—one of Israel’s encampments in the wilderness journey, between Zalmonah and Oboth. It has been identified with Pinon, an Edomite city later known for copper mines to which criminals were condemned for hard labor. The station may instead have been named for Pinon, one of the chiefs of Edom (Gen. 36:41).
