(peace)—the name of several places or persons: (1) (Gen. 14:18) by common opinion the place afterward called Jerusalem (Ps. 76:2), whose king Melchizedek came with gifts to meet Abraham after his victory; the source regards Salem as an abbreviated form of Jerusalem. (2) (John 3:23) a place near Aenon where John baptized, west of the Jordan; its exact position was unknown, though some identified it with Sheikh Salim near Beth-shean and noted a place called Ainun or Aenon near the Jordan’s western bank. (3) (2 Esd. 8:1) an ancestor of Ezra; Ezra 7:2 gives Shallum.
