(rough; rugged)—the name of two mountain ranges and also of a person and a land. (1) (Gen. 14:6) a wild, winding, barren range extending from the southern shore of the Dead Sea toward the eastern gulf of the Red Sea. Mount Hor, with Aaron’s tomb, formed one of its summits. The Horites are named among its inhabitants; in Abraham’s time one of its peoples was called Seir, and the source reports that Arabs still called the range Serr, or Seir. (2) (Josh. 15:10) another Mount Seir in Judah, west of Kiriath-jearim, which the source identifies with Kuryet el-Enab. (3) (Gen. 36:20) a Horite chief of Edom and Seir, ancestor of a prominent clan (1 Chron. 1:38–42).
