The territory of the tribe of Naphtali, as has been said above, belonged to the very fertile lands of Palestine, but the Naphtalites did not drive out from their borders the former inhabitants (Judg. 1:33), and afterward the kingdom of Jabin arose here, which was later defeated by Deborah and Barak (Judg. ch. 4). The Naphtalites also helped Gideon in his war with the Midianites and the Amalekites (Judg. 6:35). At the invasion of the Assyrians, they were led into captivity before the other Israelites, and among the captives was Tobit the Naphtalite (2 Kings 15:29, Tobit 1:2).
To the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali it was promised through the prophet Isaiah that in them, before others, the light of the Gospel would shine (Is. 9:1-2), and this was fulfilled. The Lord spent the greater part of His public ministry here, in the territories of Naphtali and Zebulun (Matt. 4:13-15), and thus “the people that sat in darkness saw a great light.”
