(crossing or ford)—the name of two places. (1) (1 Kings 4:24) a city on the Euphrates, commonly identified with Thapsacus, marking the northeastern extent of Solomon’s dominion. Greek and Macedonian armies later crossed the river in this region. (2) (2 Kings 15:16) a city attacked by Menahem after it refused him entrance. Its location is disputed, and some textual witnesses read Tappuah rather than Tipsah.
