(protected by God)—(1) the source associates this name with the ancestry of a singer who served before the tabernacle until Solomon built the Temple, citing 1 Chronicles 6:36; the standard Hebrew text at that verse does not contain the name Zephaniah, so the identification or citation is uncertain. (2) The second-ranking priest at the Temple when Jerusalem fell to Nebuchadnezzar (2 Kings 25:18). Nebuzaradan took Zephaniah, the chief priest Seraiah, three keepers of the threshold, and other officials to Riblah, where the king of Babylon had them executed.
