Zephaniah

—the name of several Israelites. (1) (2 Kings 25:18; Jer. 21:1; 29:25; 52:24–27) son of Maaseiah and the second priest in the reign of Zedekiah. He carried royal inquiries to Jeremiah, was denounced in a letter by the false prophet Shemaiah, and after Jerusalem’s fall was taken to Riblah and put to death by the king of Babylon. (2) (Zech. 6:10–14) father of Josiah, in whose house the returned exiles lodged and the symbolic crown was placed as a memorial.
